By 1964, the number of employees of the institute was more than 200 people, and in the early 70s, the institute was a large scientific institution with an extensive network of successfully operating forest experimental stations, an experimental forestry and a pilot mechanical plant. The institute's staff, together with LOS, employed more than 300 people, 120 researchers, including 1 doctor and 28 candidates of sciences. There were many young people among the workers. The institute's developments were actively introduced into production, scientific achievements were widely promoted, a lot of work was done to distribute publications, and international relations were significantly expanded. Scientific research was conducted annually on 35-40 scientific topics relevant to the region. Special attention was paid to poorly studied forests adjacent to the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM), protection and conservation of forests, issues of mechanization and automation of forestry and forestry work, management in specially protective and recreational forests, the water conservation and protective role of forests, the pruning of coniferous plantations, the use of herbicides and arboricides in forest nurseries and crops, creation of forest crops using closed-root planting material (PMZK), forestry and forest-growing zoning, logging, high-security technologies in logging for main use, the development of taxation standards and a number of other important areas for the industry
The institute's transition to self-financing and self-financing in the perestroika years complicated the staffing situation, forest experimental stations were closed or transformed into strongholds, and employees were forced to switch to part-time work.
These were difficult years, both with financing and with the formation of a research plan. In 2005, all forest experimental stations were abolished, the Khekhtsir Experimental Forestry Enterprise, which had been part of the institute for many decades, was subordinated to the Agency of Forestry for the Khabarovsk Territory. The number of employees gradually decreased and amounted to 80 people at the beginning of 2009, including 36 researchers, including 5 doctors and 16 candidates of sciences.
For its 70th anniversary, the Institute prepared and published a monograph "The current state of the forests of the Russian Far East and prospects for their use", and in October 2009, a scientific and practical conference with international participation "The state of the forests of the Far East and current problems of forest management" was held.
In total, over the past 70 years, 38 collections of works, more than 100 books, about 100 pamphlets, more than 230 recommendations for production and methodological manuals published in independent publications, about 4,000 articles in various publishing houses, about 80 abstracts of dissertations; 75 copyright certificates and 16 patents have been obtained.
Over the years, the Institute's staff has defended 15 doctoral and 76 PhD theses. For achievements in science, one employee was awarded the state prize, two were awarded the title "Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation", 16 employees were awarded the title "Honored Forester of the Russian Federation", 15 people were awarded orders and medals of the USSR and the Russian Federation, and 18 people were awarded medals of the VDNH of the USSR.
